East Point, Georgia is a small town in Pike County, Alabama. The population was 1,883 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Birmingham-Hoover metropolitan area. East Point is located on State Route 431 about 10 miles north of Birmingham and 20 miles south of Montgomery. The ZIP code for East Point is 35236. As a community it has always been agricultural with some land used for corn farming and other crops, but most residents now work in the local universities or outside of town jobsites. Some businesses within the community include The Gilded Cage restaurant and bar which opened in 2006, as well as two convenience stores - one called the Hardware Store and another called Flowers & More - both of which have been open since before 2005. The first post office in East Point was established on October 7, 1836 by Wm Blyth as Petty Officer Second Class Amos Blythe's Station No. 5 (later renamed First Class Amos Blythe's Station No.). In 1839 it became first class Amos Blythe's Station No., again under command of Commander Wm Blyth Sr.. On November 16, 1865 Union forces burned down the station building during an attack on Ft Warren while residents were evacuated to safety; no damage was done to buildings inside or outside the station. The post office relocated from its original location near present day Riverdale Drive to its present site in 1865 because of increased competition from mail carriers from nearby Birmingham who had new facilities built there including a depot and garage that still stands today. In 1914 East Point had only 2 dwellings: one being a rented house owned by James Hightower Jr., son-in-law of General John Ulysses S Grant; and one being an unoccupied cabin belonging to Alice Auldsworth about 3/4 mile North West of town limits at what is now known as "Old Alice's Ranch" off US Highway 431 just east side farm road leading into town limits where she raised chickens until her death in 1922 after which property passed through several hands until finally passing back to Alice Auldsworth's heirs who donated it to the school board in 1951-. Today there are 5 homes currently inhabited within city limits with more than 50% ownership held by white citizens: 3 single family detached houses (all Grade II listed), 1 multi-family attached dwelling also attached to a single family detached house—2 story brick ranch style home dating back to 1927 (now occupied by Alumni Association Chapter) (+1 additional story brick Tudor Revival style home dating back to 1928), 2 large commercial properties - One includes over 25 retail storefronts including 2 Sears Roebuck departments (+12 additional spaces), All properties contain approximated = 350 apartments units: 234 apartment units facing downtown square footage; 15 apartment units facingRiverdale Drive; total frontage on all streets approximately ; Backside property contains approximated = 150 parking spaces + 7 hundred garage / loading dockspaces

In 1825, East Point became part of the United States after being purchased from its original owner by President John Quincy Adams. The area around East Point has been developed into a number of neighborhoods including Northside, Southside, Downtown Savannah, and Midtown Savannah. There are many historical artifacts located throughout these neighborhoods including cannonballs from the Revolutionary War and a Confederate artillery piece from 1861.
East Point was once a part of the Cherokee Nation. In 1814, it became a U.S. military post and was known as Fort Moultrie. The fort was used to store munitions during the American Revolution. It also served as a Prisoner of War camp for Confederate soldiers during the war. In 1821, East Point became an Indian Reservation and is today known as the Cherokee Nation’s national capital, Atlanta.
