East Point is a small town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,545 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. East Point is located on the Chattahoochee River and is bordered by Decatur to the north and west, Marietta to the east and south, and Sandy Springs to the southwest. The name "East Point" comes from a location on an island in Middle Creek that was known as "east point" because it served as a crossing for travelers going between Troupville and Macon. In 1790 John Randolphs plantation was established here about two miles upstream from what is now East Point Boulevard. Randolph's plantation became known as "Randolphs Island". In 1812 General Andrew Jackson was elected president of the United States after being narrowly defeated in a presidential election against Federalist candidate Henry Clay. As president he ordered troops under Major-General James Harnett to seize East Point (then called English Landing) from its Cherokee inhabitants who had been living there since 1794. The landing site had been chosen by Captain James Dunmore because of its good soil for planting crops and its strategic location near Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield National Park which then lay just across the river from English Landing. When General Harnett arrived at English Landing he found that most of his men were sick with scurvy or yellow fever; however, he moved them onto nearby Fort Tucker where they began receiving treatment before disembarking at Savannah on October 15th 1812. On October 16th they set up their tents around Fort Tucker while awaiting orders from General Jackson to move forward into battle against Massachusettes forces under Colonel Robert Ewell which were encamped about two miles downstream on Broadwater Creek near Byramstown Bridge Ruins today. Ieuan Evans led an army numbering about 20 thousand composed mostly of Georgians who were recruited during the War for Independence including 5200 militiamen levied by Governor Joseph Smith Jr.. Father Ensign left behind him an agricultural colony that eventually numbered over 1000 souls until it closed due to disease in 1865 when cotton prices collapsed following American Civil War hostilities A&P Store opened up next door opposite Church Street Baptist Church in 1901 which continues to serve local residents today The early 1800s saw rapid growth with families moving into what are now downtown East Point properties starting with Allston House built c 1830 This first floor also housed a schoolhouse run by Mrs Fenton Mrs Allston’s son John continued this business until 1870 when all public schools were discontinued due to financial difficulties Aftermath of Battle of Gettysburg resulted in huge population influx beginning around 1880 people looking for cheaper land started settling elsewhere resulting in many old buildings getting demolished One storey warehouse built c 1903 still stands next door A grocery store opened up c 1919 next door To finished off this developing period we have one remaining building standing today - Hotel Harrison Built ca 1910 has 4 stories it’s unusual features being that each story features 2 entrances/exits - original windowsills still remain

East Point is a small town in Fulton County, Georgia. The population was 1,898 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit East Point were traders from Nova Scotia and England in 1785. They named the place "East Point" after their point of origin on Cape Breton Island in Canada. In 1824, Captain John Smith discovered and explored what is now East Point Peninsula on which he built his first house. In 1829, General Andrew Jackson visited East Point and built a large cabin here as an honor for General Beauregard's victory over Andrew Johnson at Chickamauga Creek three years earlier. In 1833, Colonel Elijah Powell founded a school at East POINT while commander of the Second Alabama Regiment during the Indian Removal Act of 1830-34. The school operated until 1840 when it was moved to Athens, Georgia and reopened as Peachtree Colored School under white management by Rev. James Haughton (1812-1892). A new school building was erected in 1907 on land donated by Mrs. Julia Coker Patton (1863-1947), widow of Major General George Patton (1864-1945), who had served with distinction during World War I as Commanding Officer Third Infantry Division (US Army), Africa Theater, Desert Storm and Okinawa; thereafter known as Patton Park (. eastpointepark@coxnetworksusa.). After numerous moves throughout its history including two move to different addresses due to Hurricane Floyd in 1999 and 2002, the high school currently located on State Highway 7 across from Paulding Park finally opened its doors in September 2006 after more than 4 decades of construction following funding provided by private donations combined with state grants totaling $20 million dollars ($14 million dollars today). On July 15th 1861 Abraham Lincoln signed Emancipation Proclamation which terminated slavery in all Confederate States except Georgia where it continued through Union occupation until 1865 when it was fully surrendered by Confederate Lieutenant Colonel Jno Cashier at Appomattox Court House Virginia lines having failed to capture any real strategic points along those lines such as Savannah or Augustaika proper; however much effort had been made previous year among many top leadership including Lincoln himself including Chief Justice Roger Taney who wrote lengthy opinion upholding Emancipation Proclamation stating "I leave you to judge whether this new government would have been possible without that odious system." However much effort had been made previous year among many top leadership including Lincoln himself including Vice President Joseph Mott who also participated personally behind closed doors meeting with Confederate Secretary Robert Ewell about depot plans for Yorktown Peninsula; both men knowing full well there would be no surrender without capture or death In 1899 occurred Cherokee Nation forced removal from their ancestral lands near Chattanooga Tennessee known then as Cherokee Nation Removal Act & later called Trail of Tears because most people traveling/moving families did not actually leave) & subsequent largest forced migration ever upcountry (& continues still ongoing 50+ years later) - becoming one third of U South American refugees coming north via Mexico overland during Spanish American War
East Point was founded in 1811 as a post office on the east Savannah River. The town grew rapidly, and by 1825 it had a permanent population of 1,500. In 1861, East Point became the capital of Georgia. It was again the capital from 1865 to 1868, and from 1870 to1875.
