East Point is a city in DeKalb County, Georgia, United States. The population was 7,682 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of DeKalb County. East Point is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The first people to settle in what is now East Point were Creek Indians who arrived fromAlabama about 1800. They constructed their village on the east side of Hatchie Creek where present day Huffman Park stands. The Creek Indians were displaced by Europeans in 1764 when they were forced to give up their land in what is now Cobb County for control of Spain's Florida colony. The earliest known inhabitants of what is now East Point were the Creek Nation, who lived there until 1812. They were followed by the Cherokee nation, which arrived in 1814 and founded what is now eastern Cobb County. In 1819, East Point was made a county seat with land from Marietta to the south and east. In 1901–1902, General George Custer fought his last battle at Chattanooga against federal troops under General William Tecumseh Sherman near East Point; this event helped spur growth in nearby Decatur and Roswell counties into new levels of development during America's first "Great Migration."
