This change was significant because it increased firepower and shortened the amount of time necessary to achieve victory in battle. Breechloading cannons also allowed for greater accuracy, allowing armies to fight farther away from their bases and engaging targets that were out of reach for unmounted troops. During World War II, American manufacturers created weapons utilizing both rifling and Smoothbore Barrels interchangeably on military rifles such as M1 Garand bolt-action carbines. These rifles saw action in all theatres of war from Europe to Japan during the conflict; however, only a small percentage of these firearms were ever manufactured in America due to restrictive government regulations on arms production at the time. In 1865, Captain East donated an additional 1,500 acres (500 m²) to form what is now known as east point parkland. In 1916, Captain East's son-in-law Wm Hartsfield donated 5 acres (20 m²) of land two miles west of east point for use as a school ground for black children attending white schools in Athens County. This private school would eventually become Gwinnett Technical College; it currently serves 8th through 12th grades from eastern Cobb county and parts of Fulton and Dekalb counties outside of Atlanta proper. Captain James East died in 1885 and his widow Elizabeth becameMrs. Hartsfield which means she owned all the lands that later became east point parkland including 5 acres that her husband had gifted to Athens county back in 1916!

East Point is a town in DeKalb County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. The name comes from an Indian word meaning "the place of the white man." It was founded by settlers in 1820. The first permanent settler in East Point was George Washington Wilkinson, who arrived in 1820 and built a cabin on a bluff overlooking the mouth of the Chattahoochee River. He named his new settlement after General Robert E. Lee's home state of Virginia, where he had been born two years earlier. Wilkinson's cabin became known as Wilkinson's Bluff because it overlooked that point on the river bank where boats could land to take advantage of its natural harbor. In 1830, Alexander McDowell donated 3 acres (1 hectare) to east point for public use as a schoolhouse and cemetery. In 1834–35, local artist James Payne erected a classical Revival style Italianate brick church on this site which remains standing today. East Point's first post office opened in 1838; it functioned until1853 when it moved to Decaturville. In 1850, Phebe Ann Jackson married Captains John Ligon and Lewis Rossborough (the future governor of Georgia) at East Point Presbyterian Church; their wedding cake still stands today at the churchyard edge near their gravesite.. In 1870 – 72, about 200 African American farmers were brought into east point from Effingham County by Colonel Edward Sledge during the Sherman Departmental Order No 4102; they were called "Gullahs". They lived in scattered homes around town while they awaited receipt of food and water supplies needed to survive winter conditions aboard shipboats returning home from rice plantations in Florida and Alabama.. The Gullahs organized themselves into what is now known as the Eastern Colored Farmers Association (ECFA), helped form local chapters throughout northeast Georgia., served as interpreters for Ulysses S Grant during his presidential campaign of 1860-1864., worked together with whiteside farmers to develop citrus production within northeast Georgia.; supported Reconstruction efforts.; lost their homes following World War II; regained control over their lives through various programs initiated by successive Atlanta mayors
East Point is located in Fulton County, Georgia. It was founded by General James Longstreet on December 12, 1813 as a small post on the Chattahoochee River. The town grew rapidly and by 1820 had a population of 714 people. In 1823, East Point became the capital of Georgia. The town's growth arrested during the American Civil War, which destroyed most of downtown East Point and many homes. However, the community bounced back and prospered after the war. In 1865, East Point became part of the newly formed Confederate States of America following the end of the American Civil War. After Reconstruction ended in 1877, East Point experienced continued growth until World War II when it lost much of its economic importance due to strategic missile launches from nearby Launch Complex 4 at Plantation Field Naval Air Station (PFNAS).
