East Point is a small town in Cobb County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,852 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The first settlers in what would become East Point were farmers who arrived in 1821 from England. The town was platted in 1832 and named for Captain John Eastpoint, who had been killed during the Creek War against the Cherokee Nation. In 1839, a post office was established at East Point and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1903. In 1865, General Nathan Bedford Forrest's Confederate army invaded Georgia and burned many towns and villages along his route to establish a national stronghold near Macon. American forces marched into East Point on October 16th and nine days later destroyed all but one house of its original settlers; most of whom had fled before the fire started. The remaining few returned home after being evacuated by boat to Savannah under cover of night. In 1898, East Point became an incorporated village under the name "Eastpoint". It reverted to its original name on November 3rd of that year when it merged with neighboring communities of Peach Bottom and Morningside to form the new city of Atlanta. In 2006, East Point celebrated its centennial with a series of events including an open-air market day,a 4 mile race around downtown streets populated by local dogsledding teams (the event drew over 100 participants),a concert by country/western artist George Strait & Friends at Peachtree Center Amphitheater among other festivities throughout that year alone
In 1829, East Point was founded by General John E. Morgan and local landowner James Robertson. The town grew rapidly due to its location on the Savannah River and its ability to access trade routes. In 1840, East Point became a town charter with four voting members. In 1851, the town became an incorporated municipality with nine voting members. By 1865, the population of East Point had reached 1,500 people and it began to prosper economically thanks to its river commerce and military importance. However, during the American Civil War (1861-1865), East Point sided with the Confederacy and surrendered to Union forces. After the war,East Point experienced a period of rapid growth as emigrants from Georgia arrived in search of new opportunities in what was then a newly industrialized country. During Reconstruction (1868-1871), East Point continued to grow as businesspeople and soldiers returned home from the war. But beginning in 1875, a series of economic setbacks caused much social unrest which eventually led to another decade of decline for East Point until it regained some stability in the early 20th century. Today,EastPoint is one of Savannah's most vibrant neighborhoods filled with history, culture, and modern amenities
