By 1860, there were over fifty homes and businesses in East Point. In 1871, East Point was chosen as the site for a new county seat because of its location between Athens and Decatur counties. The name change came about because of a special election held to decide who would be both the county recorder and attorney general. The decision to choose East Point came after an intense bidding war that included parts of Decatur County as well as Athens and Marietta Counties. The community thrived during the late 19th century until it was devastated during the GreatAtlanta Fire of 1886 which destroyed most of downtown Atlanta and left many people homeless. After years of hard work by residents and city officials, starting with Mayor John Homan's revival program in 1951 and continuing through mayor Shirley Franklin's administration, east point emerged from its rebuilding phase stronger than ever before. In 1966, east point became one of six cities (along with Alpharetta, Roswell Park Village, Sandy Springs/Roswell Park Lake Area), within the newly created city of Atlanta annexed along with other surrounding municipalities following annexation proceedings initiated by then-mayor Maynard Jackson on December 4,. After more than four decades living inside Atlanta limits - both annexed into the city proper as well as remaining separate municipality - east point finally achieved full statehood on February 1st OF THIS YEAR!
