East Point was founded by English settlers in 1824 as an agricultural community on the east side of Cobb County. The name "East Point" derives from a point on the Chattahoochee River where a fortifications were built to protect against Creek Indians. The first store in East Point was established in 1827 and it became known as the Fort Payne store because its owner, Colonel James Payne, served as military governor of Georgia during the antebellum period. A cotton gin was erected here in 1836 and two years later, rice crops began to be grown here for flour production. In 1840, General John Crampton set up his headquarters at East Point and he became one of America's leading generals during the Mexican-American War. After that war ended, East Point grew rapidly as farmers established plantations here with slave labor to produce cotton and other goods for export. By 1860, over 80% of all transactions in town were conducted through stores or post offices. During Reconstruction times (1868-1877), East Point experienced significant growth due to increasing trade with Cuba and Europe after reconstruction had been accomplished following President Ulysses S. East Point is a census-designated place in Chattahoochee County, Georgia, United States. The population was 6,892 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. In 1785, East Point was founded on a small island in the Chattahoochee River by settlers from Savannah. When the British burned Savannah in 1796, they burned East Point as well. The settlement prospered for a time but eventually went bankrupt and disappeared from history. In 1898, East Point was reestablished as an incorporated town when it was annexed by Atlanta. It quickly became one of the most important locations in Atlanta due to its location within easy walking distance of both downtown Atlanta and Wall Street (the original business district in Atlanta). The economy of East Point changed dramatically after World War II when many factories moved to the city and production stopped at some of the old mills that were located hereabouts. However, since then there has been occasional growth back into manufacturing thanks to new companies moving into town or expansions at existing businesses. East Point was founded in 1706 by the Reverend James Baldwin and his wife, Anne. The original land grant for East Point was from Governor James Oglethorpe. In 1802, the United States acquired an additional 3,500 acres from Spain in what is now known as Villa Rica. It was here that President George Washington met with Spanish Ambassador Antonio de Heredia on October 15, 1800 to discuss the possibility of ceding Florida to Spain. In 1812, War of 1812 began when a British squadron blockaded Georgia's coast. The U.S., aided by Admiral Thomas Cochrane and Rear-Admiral John Rodgers sailed into Savannah Harbor to liberate the city from British control. The Battle of Cape Fear began at sunset on April 12, 1813 after a day of fierce fighting that resulted in 5 American sailors being killed and 13 British sailors injured. Commodore Andrew Porter led a naval force ashore at East Point Heights to demand their surrender which they refused until ordered to do so by General Robert Ewing who had landed forces at Fort Pulaski with orders to capture Atlanta. Aftermath saw over 100 HMS "Tyrone" warships destroyed and 4 American merchant ships captured including the brig "Susan Elizabeth". The first post office opened at East Point on November 1, 1830; it served as the territorial capital of Georgia from December 6th 1830 until May 14th 1831 when Athens became the capital effective May 15th following its incorporation into the U S. A new courthouse was built at East Point in 1840 but it closed due to lack of patronage in early years among farmers near Bywater Creek Bridge where mail service transported items such as goods for sale across creek stopped because there were no bridges large enough for boats carrying mail cars etc.. One reason why this area failed commercially during this time period may have been due to competition from larger towns such as Athens and Milledgeville east of Bywater Creek Bridge which had started receiving mail service from Decatur more than half a century earlier
