East Point, Georgia is a small town in Lowndes County, Georgia, United States. The population was 2,907 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in East Point was John Clinchy who purchased land from the Cherokee people in 1785. He built a cabin on what is now Clinchy's Cove and named it "East Point" after his home point on Long Island Sound. In 1802, Captain James Cook sailed his ships past Cape Lookout and anchored at East Point during his exploration of Southeast Asia and Australia. From this location he surveyed much of what is now Lowndes County including present-day East Point. In 1811, Captains John Fenno and James Wimblett explored the coast from here to Savannah Harbour as part of their survey for General Andrew Jackson's army during the War of 1812. In 1865, General Nathan Bedford Forrest moved Confederate troops from Central Georgia to take up new positions around Selma towards Montgomery Alabama where they were to launch an all out attack on Union forces that were retreating before Sherman's march through Georgia into Alabama). As Forrest began moving his troops eastward along I-75 he passed through Eastpoint and destroyed most of its homes then set fire to them leaving no survivors behind but many photos and artifacts still remain today known as "The Forrest burning". East Point was incorporated as a town in 1900 by vote of its citizens; however it never attained any real development until World War II when many residents enlisted in the military or left for better paying jobs elsewhere (many returned after the war). After returning home following World War II many residents decided that they would like to see more done with their community so they founded the town hall which currently houses several businesses including a library, post office, bank & grocery store which are open Monday - Friday 9am - 6pm; Saturday 9am - 3pm; Sunday closed due to Easter holiday

The first people to live in East Point were the Atchafalaya Indians who lived on a peninsula that juts into Lake Lanier. In 1814, General Andrew Jackson moved his army from Mississippi and invaded Georgia as part of his “March to the Sea” campaign. On July 16th,1814 Jackson and his army camped at Chattahoochee River forded by General James Hogg near what is now East Point. In 1865, Confederate General Robert Ewell established a supply depot at East Point with an arsenal and 1 million rounds of ammunition for his troops besieging Atlanta. After the war ended, East Point's economy shifted from agriculture to manufacturing because of advances in transportation technology such as the Cotton Belt Railroad. East Point experienced significant growth during the late 20th century when it became home to several major companies including Coca-Cola Company (later PepsiCo), TWA Airlines (now Delta Air Lines), Monsanto Co., National Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) and Sports Illustrated Inc.. In recent years, however, EastPoint has begun to experience declines in its population and economic importance due to suburbanization and other factors.
