Duluth is one of the oldest cities in America and was founded in 1858 by Danish immigrants. The city has been home to two universities: University of Minnesota Duluth and Georgia State University. In 1862, General George Wallace visited Duluth and purchased land there for his new cavalry regiment, Wallace's Brigade of Alabama Mounted Rifles. In 1865, General Robert E. Lee's Army passed through Duluth on its way to battle at Gettysburg; as a result, many businesses located near Forest Park were damaged or destroyed during that battle. The Battle of Atlanta (1863) was fought in Fulton County outside of Duluth; as a result, many people from Fulton County fled to other parts of the country when Confederate forces invaded Union territory during that war. In 1875, Congress appropriated $100 million for building projects within 25 miles (40 km) of Washington D.C.; as a result, streets were widened and improved throughout much of what is now southeastern Atlanta metropolitan area including Duluth; this also led to the nickname "The City Beautiful". In 1887-88, construction began on what would become known as NewAtlanta – an important transportation hub for Atlanta – with help from local businessmen John Pemberton and James Hartsfield Sr.; this allowed for more efficient transportation between downtown Atlanta and rural areas east and west of that city limits. By 1906, all streetcar lines had been closed because they were no longer profitable due to pollution created by industry along with rising rail fares; instead buses became dominant until automated vehicles became available starting in the early 21st century.
