A man by the name of John Bigham patented a sling that could be attached to a rifle barrel, allowing shooters to shoot farther distances with more accuracy. The first permanent settler in what would become Duluth was John Burchard who arrived on December 3, 1881 with his family from New York City. He named his new community "Duluth" after his wife's childhood home in Scotland – "East Lothian". By 1886, there were over 60 residents living in Duluth proper with only a few families living beyond the original town line which ran along present day 6th Street SW - across from where Morningside Coffee House now stands! In 1886-87 local schools were established including Mrs Jameson's School on 8th Street SW betweenknob Road (now part of UMd) and 7th Avenue NW - this school still exists today as Lakeshore Learning Academy! Mrs Jameson later donated land adjoining her school lot for UMD's main campus building which became known as Main Campus Drive/Empire Building today! Today about half of all students at UMd attend some form of supplemental education program outside their homes!! A big reason why such innovative educational opportunities have developed here during peacetime are our excellent public transportation options that include MARTA [the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority], buses & trains running every 20 minutes or so; biking & walking paths throughout town; world-renownedLake Superior fishing & boat rentals available year round; great shopping venues like Macy's Barrington Station[and] Ross Dress For Less; top rated restaurants like Grille du Nord[and] Iron Chef Georges Vongerichten’s restaurant right near downtown - you name it we've got it!
