In 1861, when Confederates captured Athens during the American Civil War, they burned down much of downtown Athens and moved its government buildings into Douglasville to avoid capture or destruction by Union forces. The city never surrendered but was held until 1865 when it finally fell to Confederate troops under General Nathan Bedford Forrest without any fight from residents or businesses. Afterward,Douglasville slowly recovered as an agricultural center with a focus on cotton production until World War II brought about rapid growth due to military activity in nearby Peach Bottom and other parts of Fulton County

Today only traces of Douglasvillians remain: a few obelisks still stand as memorials to their former mayor and council members; and three blocks east of downtown lies an abandoned shopping mall that once housed the old grocery store and post office. The Great Recession hit Georgia hard in 2007-2008, causing many businesses to close their doors and lay off employees. Unemployment rates in DouglasVILLE reached 25%. The effect on local economy was devastating as businesses closed up shop while families were forced to scramble for food options outside the city limits. This caused poverty levels to increase which also contribute greatly into crime rates in this small town throughout2009-2010
