Douglasville is located on the north side of the stateline and is bordered to the east by Druid Hills, to the south by Carrollton, to the west by Roswell and to the north by Stone Mountain. The first significant settlement in what would become Douglasville was made in 1833 when General James Milledge built a farm on what is now US-2 near what is now Douglas High School. The original name of this farm was “Milledge” after General James Milledge himself. In 1881, Hodge & Co., merchants, moved from their previous home in Sandy Springs into an old cotton gin building at Third and Randolph Streets which they called “The Girders” because it had been used as a wharf for shipping goods coming upriver from Tennessee during Reconstruction. They continued to run their store there until around 1920 when they sold all their assets and left town. In 1906-07 Major Elisha Jethro Gibbs laid out a town square that still stands today between Fourth Street South and Fifth Street North in downtown Douglasville just off Interstate 85 (the current site of Ponce City Hall). He named it after his friend/business partner Ebenezer Higgins who had helped him get started as an entrepreneur in Georgia back in 1892 while he was mayoralty candidate for Cobb County! Upon completion of his plan within one year it met with very little opposition from either locals or outsiders due to its well thought out design features including streetscape patterns that paralleled I-85 which made it easy for motorists not only see but also enter and exit through its two entrances/exits!
