Douglasville is a city in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 23,521 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Fulton County and home to the Douglasville Naval Air Station. The city was founded by planters who named it after their late father, General James Douglas. The first permanent settler in Douglasville was John McMurtry, who arrived in 1802. A post office called Douglasville was established in 1805, and remained in use until 1875. When the courthouse burned down in 1876, the townspeople built a new courthouse on Courthouse Square. In 1865, General James Douglas (1813-1881), an American general and statesman who served as Vice President of the United States under Andrew Johnson and as Commander-in-Chief of Confederate forces during the Battle of Bull Run fame, donated land to make up what is now downtown Douglasville. He also organized a "Fulton Agricultural Society" which raised money for poor farmers across Fulton County through hogsheads wine sales from his plantation near Marietta Junction. The city's growth began with its incorporation as a town on December 2nd, 1897; when all of southern Fulton County became part of the newly formed state of Georgia following Reconstruction following the American Civil War. With more than 12 square miles (25 km2) within its boundaries at that time – much larger than any other community in south Fulton County –Douglasville quickly became one of Georgians' most populous jurisdictions by 1910. By 1914 it had reached 20,000 residents and annexed much rural territory east of I-285/ US-41 between Decatur Road and Butternut Road; this annexation left DouglasVILLE with a total area exceeding 25 square miles (70 km2).
