Douglasville is a city in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 21,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. Douglasville is home to The University of Georgia and Georgian State University. The first permanent settler in what would become Douglasville was David Wortham on December 12, 1802. Wortham donated land for a square mile in what is now the downtown core of Douglasville. He named it after himself and his brother-in-law, John “Cowan” Forbush. In 1803, Wortham enjoined his heirs to sell all their holdings within two years or face forfeiture of their property. This policy served as a deterrent to future settlers from coming to this isolated location which had few amenities and no road access. In 1814, James Aikens arrived in what would become Douglasville with his family from Bathurst County, Georgia and laid out a plat for the town on land that still stands today near present day First Baptist Church on Seminary Avenue. Aiken built a log cabin known as "Aiken's Grove" on this plot of land where he resided until his death in 1837. Some early pioneers who lived here included Captains John Stevens (1792-1870) and Samuel Barron (1795-1875). Captain Stevens was one of America's earliest naval heroes; he played an important role during the War of 1812 and later helped found Atlanta (then called Gadsden). Captain Stevens' descendants still live in nearby Duluth, Minnesota . Bartholomew Coleman (1801-1868), also from Bathurst County,, founded Coleman & Son lumberyards located just east of downtown Douglasville when the area became busier with cotton plantations expanding westward into Fulton County *. Coleman also helped organize local farmers into cooperative associations which improved agricultural production*. These organizational efforts led to increased trade between Fulton County(*and* other states*) and Georgia*, leading to wealth creation for many people living hereabouts *. By 1830*, most residents were white Anglo-Saxon Protestants *although some black families did manage to establish themselves*.* One resident – Elijah Peebles – even managed Toombs Plantation south of town before eventually selling it back to whites in 1865.* [* Note: Some researchers claim that white Lutheran missionaries established churches inside the city limits circa 1840 - although there are no documentary evidence supporting this claim.] The first school opened its doors at Sixth Street and Randolph Road on November 1st, 1829 under guidance from Reverend Jeptha Henson (*a Methodist minister *) . Classes began at 9 am each morning and lasted until 3 pm each afternoon; these days are considered foundation memories for many Douglastonians*. In 1830+, work began on building what would become The University Of Georgia - one of America's most prestigious universities*. At that time*, students met only in private homes or barns due to lack of space on campus; however*, soon enough classes moved into larger buildings acrossSeminary Avenue including Mrussell Hall(*now held by The University OfGeorgia Trustees Office), Beechwood Hall(*now used as office space by Drury College*.), Mrs Fenton’s House (*now occupied by TRW Incorporated*) , Browning Hall(*now used as housing units by Reynoldson School District), Steele Chapel(*recently renovated**) , Hawkins Chapel(new structure open since Spring 2006), Tucker Chapel(new structure open since Fall 2006)*.* It should be noted that while much has changed over time regarding student body size/location etc., faculty remains largely unchanged - something which marksDouglasville as one OF THE PREMISES FOR UNIVERSITY STUDENTS IN TEXAS .)* *Note: According to some sources around 1850-60%, about 60%+of enrollment came fromwithin Douglaston Parish itself rather thanoutside†.* [* Note: According to another source closer TO THE PRESENT DAY], about 50%+ enrollment came FROM outside OF ATLANTIC COUNTY ] By 1860*, more than 80%of enrollment came FROMoutside OF ATLANTIC COUNTY [*]!
