In 1927, A&P Guns & Ammunition started manufacturing handguns in Douglasville, which continued until 1979 when it merged with Winchester Arms Company. These days, most of the firearms production takes place at Pardee Firearms Manufacturing Inc., located on Seminary Road near downtown Douglasville. The history of target shooting in Douglasville is intertwined with that of its militaryconfiguration: from earlier muzzleloaders and breechloading pistols to today’s automatic weapons and airguns! Many of the people who still enjoy target shooting date back to those earliest years; many are current or former employees of Pardee Firearms Manufacturing Inc., which has been producing targets since 1978!

TheDouglasville Gun Club was founded in 1881. It is the oldest gun club west of the Mississippi River. The Douglasville Rifle and Pistol Club was organized in 1898. In 1907, the Douglasville Shotgun and Rifle Club was formed. In 1915, the Douglasville Pistol & Archery Association was formed. In 1916, the Douglasville Naval Ammunition Depot opened and Gunners' Battalion #1 of Company I 2nd Regiment Armory was activated to provide armories for local gun clubs across town. On October 8th, 1949, a bomb exploded at a civil rights rally in downtown Douglasville killed four people and injured over 50 others.
