In 1814, General James Harnett founded Harnett's Ferry on Chattahoochee River which served as a transportation link between Athens, Georgia and Decatur, Alabama for settlers coming into western Georgia fromAlabama duringthe early 1800s. In 1821, when Congress passed an act authorizing Surveyor General Daniel Smith to survey Indian lands within Cobb County (northwest corner of Fulton County), John Blythe donated land southeast of present day Douglasville for public use as well as for schoolteachersand other civil servants who might need access to education opportunities on Indian Territory under then new policy known as "Amorett's Law". Douglasville is a town in DeKalb County, Georgia, United States. The population was 9,554 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The name Douglasville is derived from General Robert E. Lee's home and plantation in this town during Reconstruction after the American Civil War. The first settler in what would become Douglasville was James Hance who arrived in 1802 along with his family from North Carolina. He built a cabin on the site of present day Courtland Street and named it Hance Crossing after himself and his two brothers-in-law, John Witherspoon and Richard Hance (the father of General James Hance). In 1806, when Andrew Jackson became president of the United States, he ordered all Native Americans removed from Alabama because they were considered "not white." This order led to violence between whites and Native Americans throughout the southern United States as groups fought for control over land that had been granted to them by European settlers. One such battle took place in Alabama where Douglasville residents sided with the Native Americans against white settlers. After this fight, Andrew Jackson ordered all Indian tribe members west of the Mississippi River must leave their properties or be forcibly removed by force if they could not leave voluntarily within seven days or face military action. Douglasville began growing rapidly due to its location on a main road connecting Atlanta with Chattanooga, Tennessee and Nashville, Tennessee which made it an early stop on wagon trains traveling southward during the antebellum period before cars arrived on Main Street in downtown Dougherty in 1837
