On October 11, 1837, General Oglethorpe conferred with Colonel John Douglas about forming an army to attack Mobile Bay and its supplies being transported there from Pensacola via Spanish ships anchored off Fort Stroudwater on Mobile Bayou On November 1st 1837 Captain Wm Davenport arrived at Savannah with 9000 troops under his command expecting to join General Oglethorpe's campaign against Great Britain but due to bad weather they were forced back to their ship before reaching Mobile Bay In January 1840 after years of planning General Andrew Jackson finally invaded Florida during his Expedition into Alabama & Mississippi taking Gainesboro & Chickamauga which left much needed troops behind including 3000 men under Major George Pickett waiting for orders from Knoxville Arkansas Territory commander Capt Tom Higginson notifying him that Major Pickett had taken over operations so pick up your packhorse and march into Chattanooga Tennessee you are dismissed’ responded Governor Thomas Altman Captain Wm Davenport disembarking his ship in Savannah reported that he had seen Indian Reservations around Etowah Coosa River just east of here I started out this morning rode all night long without finding any trace of Indians found nothing but rawhide hams weighed down by branches no water anywhere near these Reservation sites where we expected To find several hundred warriors he soon learned from friendly Indian traders living near Dahlonega that these Wasps were only making noise because they had lost their home range about 10 miles due south along Dry Creek some 300 yards wide & 150 yards deep where they livedfree from Government interference until white people came Captain Davenport did not find any evidence that this location was ever used by the Indians although it may have been more likelyberry or grapevines grew here& later became property of US government while reservations remain private today
