On July 1, 1792, Douglasville was founded as a small community in the Chattahoochee River Valley by Captain James Robertson and his wife. The name comes from General John Adams' recommendation for the town after he toured it during the War of 1812. The first post office opened in 1813 and was called Old Douglasville. In 1834, the town became part of Atlanta, Georgia.
