Douglasville is a city in and the county seat of Douglas County, Georgia, United States. The population was 27,782 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The town began as a sawmill settlement on the Chattahoochee River in 1832 by settlers from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. In 1836, the site became known as "Pinecrest" after an early settler there. The name was changed to Douglasville in 1851 because of land purchases by General James Haney Blount from Cherokee Nation leaders for $1 million. In 1840, when Douglasville was founded, it was one of eight townships in Lumpkin County that were organized into a new county under Governor James Kenedy. The other seven townships were Smyrna (1841), Paulding (1846), Carrollton (1847), Stone Mountain (1849), Lawrenceburg (1850), and Bainbridge (1851). The first courthouse in Douglasville was built on Main Street in 1851; it served as the home court of judges until 1913 when it moved to its current location on Court Avenue. By 1870, Douglasville had a population of 2200 residents and two churches: First Baptist Church which opened in 1865 and Phillips Methodist Episcopal Church which opened in 1870. In 1907-1908, during World War I, Douglasville joined with neighboring Fulton and DeKalb counties to form Jonesboro–Douglas County War Department Area No. 1; this gave rise to the nickname "War Department City." After World War II ended, most manufacturing left Douglasville for more efficient plants worldwide but some businesses such as Jardine's continued operation until they closed around 1990 due to lack of demand from buyers outside Georgia According to U .S .
