The city grew rapidly during World War II due to its proximity to military bases and its position as one of the few major American cities without discriminating against African Americans or Japanese Americans. The city also experienced rapid growth after Decatur glass manufacturer J&J Gallo opened his new plant there in 1945 and started production of lead acid batteries for automobiles and other cars. The city annexed many nearby communities during this time including Sweetwater (1948), West Point (1950), East Point (1952), Clairton (1954), Paulding Heights (1957) and Garden Grove (1959). In recent years,Douglasville has made efforts to become more environmentally friendly by becoming an early adopter of green technology such as LED lighting and energy-conserving appliances like air conditioning units that use natural gas instead of electricity. Douglasville is a town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 3,917 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. Douglasville was founded in 1821 by Captain James Milledge and his family as a small trading post on the Chattahoochee River. In 1827, Captain Milledge and his sons Caleb and John incorporated the town of Douglasville but it did not become a reality until 1831 when James Milledge's grandson, Alexander Milledge donated land to the town for its first courthouse and schoolhouse. The first store opened in 1832 and soon after, residents started building homes. Douglasville became an importantcities on the east coast of Georgia due to its strategic location on both routes that connected Atlanta with Savannah and Charleston respectively. In 1840, Douglasville had two churches- one Evangelical Baptist which was dedicated by Reverend John Rankin on October 25th (the date of what is now known as Rankin Park) And another Methodist church which was dedicated by Reverend Auld McNaughton on December 2nd (the date that is now known as Enterprise Square). In 1861, Governor Nathan Bedford Forrest moved 5 families from Decatur to enter into an agreement with General Price to purchase 7 acres of land east of Decatur Creek for $5 per family. This event signaled the beginning of what would be called "The Great Migration" which brought many African Americans westward during this time period because they saw opportunities in Jackson County, Alabama where cotton cultivation had already commenced. The migration led to mass unemployment among blacks who were unable to find jobs in their new geographic region because white employers preferred people who were skilled at manual labor such as blacksmiths or farmers instead of those with technical skills like mechanics or scientists. This lack of opportunity contributed to social unrest within black communities throughout America during these years because even though many whites wanted nothing more than economic equality for all citizens regardless of race or color, they could not provide it themselves despite having vast resources themselves
Douglasville was founded in 1820 by Captain John Douglas and his family. The town was named for General James McDowell, who had taken part in the War of 1812. The first store in the town was built on what is now State Route 8. In 1830, the Douglas family moved to Decatur and opened a general store there. In 1834, Captain John Douglas died and his wife, Elizabeth, took over the business. In 1840, she married Major Richard Pritchett and continued to run the store until her death in 1888. In 1865, Colonel Nathan Bedford Forrest visited Douglasville and decided to moving his Georgia military headquarters to the town. The colonel's headquarters remained in the town until it was destroyed by a fire in 1978. The community went through several name changes before becoming known as Douglasville proper in 1912. It changed again to its current name in 1928 after being purchased by Jock Mahoney Sr., an entrepreneur who popularized early 20th century golf courses across central Georgia
