Douglas Sr., who arrived with his family from Scotland in 1836. He began farming land around present-day downtown and built a house on what is now Fourth Street near the Chattahoochee River. In 1840, he married Sarah Ewing and together they started a small grocery business called "The Ewings' Store". They also operated a ferry across the river to bring goods to customers located at what is now Broadwater Cemetery adjacent to downtown (now known as Midtown). By 1850, they had moved their store to what is now First Street between Second and Third Streets near today's military academy complex (now known as West Campus). In 1861, Captain John A. Douglas Jr., son of John A.Douglas Sr., immigrated from Scotland with his parents and seven siblings and settled in Smyrna, Alabama where he met his future wife Fannie Ladda Hargrave whom he married on March 4th, 1861 at First Baptist Church in Smyrna just before Mobile Bayou flooded after an intense thunderstorm that week which destroyed most homes along the lower Chattahoochee River Valley including those within walking distance of downtown Birmingham Airport which then served as Atlanta's international airport until it closed in 1996 due to budget cuts during Mayor Andrew Young's administrations watch) . After several years living primarily outside of Alabama due to financial constraints they emigrated permanently to Chattanooga, Tennessee where they resided until their death there on October 15th, 1897 aged 72 years old making them one of only six people ever buried within city limits following incorporation into Atlanta when it took effect on November 3rd following passage by Georgia General Assembly of an act entitled "An Act for enlarging or extending boundaries of CityofAtlanta" . This period saw rapid growth for both areas with streets being renamed later Earl Long Boulevard For example Home Avenue/Hargrave Avenue etcetera further distinguishing these two parts Of town while still remaining tightly bound geographically speaking even though physically not so divided by interstate highways having grown right next door despite sharing only one major street name! After World War II many newcomers continued coming but more families decided against settling down due mainly because there were few opportunities available here compared either nationally or locally especially considering tax rates were high relative newcomer incomes while jobs remained scarce throughout much OF THE 20TH CENTURY!
