In 1851, Johnnie Ray built a store next door to Hogg's Store and called it Ray's Store. It was here that citizens adopted the name "Douglasville" for their new town. By 1860, there were more than 20 firearms stores operating throughout Georgia including Douglasville. Douglasville is located on the east side of the Chattahoochee River, about 12 miles (19 km) north-northwest of Atlanta and 10 miles (16 km) south-southwest of Chattanooga. The city was founded in 1851 by John Douglas and his wife Catharine Augusta Smith. It became a municipality in 1870, and an incorporated town in 1909. In the 1920s it became part of Atlanta metropolitan area. The Douglasvilles were among the pioneers who arrived in what is now Fulton County during the early 1800s. They built homes near what is now downtown Douglasville and developed other businesses around trade routes toates such as the Chattahoochee River and its tributaries. One of these pioneer families, the Douglases, left their home on Vassar Street for what is now downtown Douglasville after their children's education was delayed because of Indian Removal policies under Ulysses S Grant's administration. In 1851 John Douglas erected a log cabin near present day Homecoming Road to provide shelter for his family during winter months when they travelled from nearby Milledgeville overland to supply crops grown by local farmers with food they brought back with them from their trip across the country. The first school teaching in this area took place inside this log cabin in March 1852 under instruction from Master James Mclntyre while he served as teacher at nearby Springdale School which had been established two years earlier by Presbyterian missionaries First Baptist Church trustees James Frazier and Drayton Wylie Inman along with another group of educators led by Reverend George Hickey Willis also from Milledgeville westward across portions of Norcross County towards Cumming soon afterwards becoming one large educational center serving many surrounding communities including much later Peachtree City Schools as well as providing transportation services within that larger region for many people throughout those early days especially given that there was no roads or rails within this rural region then available to transport students or goods either way between these various settlements or out into neighboring counties away from central Atlanta so much later!
