The history of Douglasville begins with what is now known as Post Road on the west side of town, where families from Decatur brought their corn to be ground into flour for sale in Worthington and other towns to the east. In 1802, Post Road became Macon Road after General Nathan Bedford Forrest's army passed through on its way to War-time Tennessee. In 1815, General James Kenedy sold land that included today's downtown and parts of today's east side for $3 per acre (about $ in ). This purchase opened up much needed trade routes for settlers in this area which would include later Douglasville residents such as Colonel John Steedman and Drury Lane bottler J. P. Morgan who both founded businesses hereabouts during 1860-1865 while working on construction of Atlanta central station; soon afterwards new streets were laid out including Macon Street which ran parallel to US Highway 31 south of town until it was rerouted north just outside town limits when I-285 was built; old Macon Street has been renamed several times since then including Old Fourth Ward Boulevard which runs along its length between I-285/Old Fourth Ward Boulevard and Downtown Drive/Fulton Avenue - making it one stoplight away from Midtown Atlanta! In 1892 a group led by Grady Jarrett purchased 1,500 acres (560 hectares) northeast of present day Douglasville from Major General Andrew Johnson for $5 per acre (about $ in ). Jarrett named his tract "Jarrett Field" after himself and developed it into a major cotton plantation with slaves working hundreds of acres (960 hectares). A schoolhouse was built there about 1907 but fell into disrepair and was abandoned until 1930 when it was added to the National Register of Historic Places under designation number 7052 . After World War II development accelerated due to an influx of refugees fleeing Communist China throughout Asia – some arriving via railway trains headed straight for America - many young men found work hereabouts pressing goods onto railcars pushed along by freight trains packed with human beings like so many prairie chickens! Today you can still see evidence left behind by earlier developers such as wagons filled with haystack shaped bricks used to build roads ahead or back then cinderblocks ready for erection! After World War II most people leftDouglasville except a small number who continued farming until around 1960 when computers made mass production possible begin0ing down at 10 cents an item starting up larger than ever before jobs were opening all over southern US factories lots coming ashore hereabouts right near our ports creating giant warehouses right next door right off I-285 giving us our name “The City That Time Forgot” !!! Large companies like Dow Chemical Company started moving HERE post war followed by others like GEICO Insurance & Travel Corp., Coca ColaCola Bottling Co., American Tobacco Company etc……..the list goes on forever never ending growth no matter how you look at it!!!!!!!!!!
