Douglasville is a small town in Douglas County, Georgia, United States. The population was 2,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. They used two pieces of wood that had been glued together to form a viewing piece and an eyepiece on either side of the instrument. By 1830, these devices had been improved to allow for magnification up to 12x and were able to be used for hunting and bird watching. The popularity of binoculars continued through the early 21st century with sales reaching over 100 million units globally by 2006. The city is named after General James Douglas, who fought in the American Revolutionary War and was a signer of the Declaration of Independence. The first European to visit what is now Douglasville was Captain John Smith on October 10, 1795. He landed at what is now mouth of Muscogee Bay on Monday Evening December 4th and explored this area before continuing his journey upriver to Savannah on January 3rd. On January 12th James Cook anchored off the coast at nearby Rocky Point and made landfall with his party consisting of three Englishmen: Captains William Bligh and Henry Tooke, both Adventurers; and Mr. Adams from Boston (the Fourth Doctor). They were followed by Captains Ross and Macdonough about two weeks later but no records survive to show whether they reached their destination or not. In 1802 Colonel John Epps built a sawmill here which continued operation until 1903 when it closed because OFA ruled that mills had to be operated for more than one hundred years without interruption in order for them to be considered historical sites

Today, Douglasville continues to be an important center for research and technology due to its many hospitals and universities which include Emory University School of Medicine and Health Sciences; Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech), Peachtree Center for Entrepreneurship Studies; Fulton County College; Ponce de Leon Community College; McDowell County Community College;and Kennesaw State University's School of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Science
