Douglasville is a small town in Georgia, located in the Atlanta metropolitan area. It was named for General and statesman Douglas MacArthur, who fought in World War II there. The population of Douglasville was 8,887 at the 2010 census. The town began as a farming community on the Chattahoochee River. In 1836, landowner A.P. Hill donated 1,500 acres (500 ha) to the Methodist church in what is now Douglasville. The first settlers were Methodists from Tennessee and North Carolina; they built log homes and started a blacksmith shop. In 1837, General James Hogg organized the First Cherokee Nation into twelve districts with one representative each; he appointed Douglasville's first white settler, John Bowen, as its representative. In 1840–41, nine men founded the Town of Macon on the Chattahoochee River opposite present-day Douglasville; they raised crops and hunted game but did not build anything permanent until after their arrival some years later when Nicholas Dwyer bought 640 acres (240 ha) of land from A P Hill for $4 per acre ($640/ha). By 1845 Macon had a school and two stores: one by André Michaux and Wm Brownell, both proprietors wharf owners on Savannah's riverfront; another by Elisha Beall who also operated an inn that became known as "The Gables". In 1850 William Troup purchased 640 acres (240 ha) adjoining Nicholas Dwyer's property for $8 per acre ($2/ha). At this time Douglasville had three stores: One by John Bowen and Wm Brownell; one by André Michaux along with his brother-in-law Wm Pettit; another by Geo Rainsford which became known as "The Grange" after him because it served as headquarters for various local militia units during Reconstruction There was also an agricultural settlement called "Macon" about five miles north of present day Macon which consisted of four small farms rented from noble landowners including George Rogers Clark before he moved to Kentucky to become governor in 1861 Dougherty House Museum opened its doors on October 12th 2009 adjacent to Marietta High School
