It lies on the north side of the Chattahoochee River, east of Atlanta and west of Savannah. The town was founded in 1837 by John A. Douglas and named for him. The first settlers in Douglasville were mechanics who worked for the local sawmills and grist mills. They started a small store next door to their mill and began to trade with other settlements along the river. In 1845, John A. Douglas opened a tannery which became one of the largest in Georgia. He also built a blacksmith shop and wagon workshop nearby which survives today as the Depot Workshops Museum located on Church Street between Patton Boulevard and North Avenue in Douglasville. In 1884, John A.Douglas donated land to become an agricultural center with storageyards, churches, schools, hotels and other buildings designed by architects such as George Stephenson and Thomas Fuller among others. The town continued to grow until it reached its peak during World War II when it had over 20 thousand residents within commuting distance to support military service overseas or Internment Camps like Tuskegee Institute or Fort Benning Army Airfield respectively
