The area now known as Douglas was first settled by Native Americans in the 17th century. In 1802, Andrew Jackson became president of the United States and ordered all Indian tribes to removal from their land in eastern Tennessee and western Alabama. This order led to what is nowknown as the Trail of Tears. The Creek Nation responded to Jackson's orders by fighting back with violence and refusing to leave their homes. After many months of fighting, on April 14,1804, most of the Creeks were driven out of East Tennessee and into present-day Alabama by Ulysses S. Grant under military pressure from President Jefferson Davis. It took until 1830 for white settlers to begin arrive in Douglas County; they began arriving in significant numbers during the early 19th century when railroads arrived in Georgia and South Carolina.. By 1850,Douglas County had a population of 2,500 people; it had grown rapidly due to immigration over subsequent decades – 8% of its residents were foreign-born by 1880! Today’s Douglas comes down to two aspects: agriculture (especially cotton) and manufacturing (particularly plastics). Cotton has long been an important part of local economy; since 1930, production has totaled more than 12 million pounds per year!
