Douglas was founded by Thomas Douglas in 1802 as the town of Douglas. It was renamed Douglas in 1813 after General Andrew Jackson, who had won the Battle of Horseshoe Bend at Douglas. The town continued to be called Douglas until it became a city on December 12, 1907. In 1966, the city changed its name to Atlanta. The first settlers in what is now Douglas were farmers who came overland from Georgia and Tennessee in early 1800s. By 1802, they had built a log cabin and started trading with Indians. In 1803, the first post office was established at Douglas and later moved to Athens. The first store opened in 1811 and soon there were several cotton plantations located around the town. In 1863, during the American Civil War, Confederate General John Crayton made an unsuccessful attempt to take Douglas from Union General Sherman. After this event, most of the people left for good and the only structure remaining from pre-war days was a courthouse which served as a jail for many years before being destroyed in 1906. In 1907, Atlanta became one of America’s largest cities when it seceded from Georgia into its own country under President William McKinley’s Executive Order 9982 calling for all southern states to become “free and independent republics” within five years or face secession remedies including annexation by Mexico if they did not comply. On December 12th of that year (1907), Atlanta became an official city with Mayor James Mays serving as its first mayoralty holder; he would hold that position until his death on November 3rd of that year). Over time (1917-1966), mayors included Hiram Johnson (1945-1948), Juanita Broaddrick (1965-1970), Maynard Jackson (1971-1975)–the last one being elected without term extension –and Ivan Allen (1976-1980). Atlanta experienced some major events during those decades such as World War II when more than 100 factories operated inside city limits; afterward however economic stagnation followed until Mayor Kasim Reed took office which led to downtown redevelopment starting in earnest beginning in 1996 known as Midtown Fulton Mall which generated jobs throughout much of downtown area outside of Randolph/Lenox Tower where most housing still remains today despite efforts by developers over recent decades aiming mostly towards parks near Lenox Tower instead Many famous Atlantans have lived or played here including Bill Gates, Dr Martin Luther King Jr., Oprah Winfrey etc
