In 1835, he married Anna Maria Todd, daughter of Judge James Todd of Macon County. They had two children: David E., born in 1836, and Anna Isabelle (AIs) born in 1840. TheDouglas-Todd family prospered for many years; however, during the mid-19th century economic conditions changed dramatically in America. Firms that relied on slave labor began to decline as production shifted to machines and other sources of cheap labor. At the same time, slavery declined throughout much of North America; Ulysses S. Grant abolished it in 1865. This change led to increased competition for jobs among farmers and entrepreneurs who could no longer rely on slaves for their income. As a result of these changes, Douglas saw his business decline and went bankrupt multiple times over the next several decades. He died at age 84 years old in 1921 after a long career as an entrepreneur and landowner in central Georgia
