Douglas, Georgia is a small town located in the southeast corner of Fulton County, Georgia. The population was 10,814 at the 2010 census. It is the only village in Fulton County and one of its two Micropolitan Statistical Areas. Douglas is home to the main campus of historically black Tuskegee University. The first white settlers in Douglas were families from Athens, Georgia who came in 1819. By 1830, there were about 25 white residents and six slaves in Douglas. In 1835, General James Blair moved his army from Atlanta to take on Creek rebels led by John Ross inside the Chattahoochee River delta near Dahlonega. This action helped start what would become known as the Indian Removal crisis. The whites in Douglas tried to keep their community while some African Americans left for new opportunities outside of Georgia; however, most African Americans living withinDouglas decided to stay when they heard of General Blairs' plan to move all blacks out of Cherokee Nation into newly created Indian Territory west of Alabama underlies land that now forms part of Douglas Community College and other businesses and homes recently developed near Interstate 20 exit 5 (Bryan Road). In 1840-41, many people associated with Dougalls' Methodist church founded a theological seminary which became Tuskegee Normal School; it was first attended by black students from neighboring towns such as Decatur and Roswell after seeing an opportunity for education among poorer blacks willing to leave their plantations for more limited opportunities within American society than they could find back home on those same plantations themselves. After years of struggle by faculty and students against discriminatory practices at Tuskegee Normal School by trustees/administrators throughout its history (including during World War II), enrollment reached 1,500 black college graduate women in 1950s-60s alone before dropping below 400 following desegregation efforts initiated by then-President Lyndon Johnson's Department of Education secretary Nicholas Katzenbach (brought about through Executive Order 10706), eventually reaching that number again only around 200 or so today due largely to familial effects - including intermarriage - among African American college graduates currently working or looking for work outside their communities across many different industries throughout America today: nurse assistant jobs being especially notable among them!
