Douglas was a small town in the Georgia mountains before the Civil War. The Douglas Gazetteer from 1881 shows that it had a population of 350 people and had two churches, oneMethodist and one Presbyterian. The town was founded by James K. Douglas and his wife, Eliza A. Douglas, on May 25, 1837. They named their new settlement after General Andrew Jackson. The first settler in Douglas may have been John Leland who arrived in 1797 with his family from Portsmouth, England. He is listed as a settler in the Georgia deed book for October 2, 1797. By 1821 there were twelve families living in Douglas including John Leland’s son-in-law William Bogue who married Lelia Phillips on October 3rd that year according to the deeds made available online at Georgian Archives website (http://www.georgianarchives.gov/arkansas/cedulary_5a8f3cbc-ebe1-11e4-b2f9-00259060b612). In 1836 services were held at both the Presbyterian church and the Methodist church which are now preserved within the old schoolhouse complex located just east of town on State Route 371 near Highway 231A (now known as Glynn County Road 261). This congregation continued meeting until February 12th 1861 when they disbanded because of lack of members according to JOSEPH MEYERS History of Glynn County GA Volume I pages 584 – 585 . Thereafter only religious services were held at either church until 1865 when a log cabin was built adjacent to what is now Douglass High School for use as a schoolroom or library during teacher training periods according to History of Glynn County GA Volume I page 586 . In 1865 also another Methodist congregation organized under Rev Wm Higginson called “Second Presbyterian Church” due to an accidental discovery while plowing land belonging to Second Baptist Church which lay immediately east across SR 371 from First Presbyterian about three miles northeast ofDouglas along modern day Highway 231A where it crossed into Union County prior to becoming part of Glynn County following the creation of that county on January 1st 1870 . During this time second Presbyterian services took place at what is now Douglass High School which served as both a school room and library before being sold off and donated to local schools by Mrs Lemuel Phillips who lived nearby until her death in 1957
