Douglas is one of the most important cities in Central Georgia and is home to many small businesses and families that make up the backbone of the local economy. The city's history begins with settlers who arrived in what is now Douglas on December 15, 1827. The first settler named Douglas was Obed Hickman and his family. This early group of pioneers were successful farmers who began raising cotton and other crops. In 1836, they sold their land to John Alexander Duncan for $1,000 cash. The town of Douglas rapidly grew because it became an important stop on the Underground Railroad during the 1840s and 1850s when fugitive slaves were able to escape from slave-owners in Alabama and other states. Many freedmen moved into Douglas after it became a free state in 1865 following the American Civil War. In 1861, Abraham Lincoln called for military action against Confederate forces occupying central Georgia including Douglas which he said would be "an instance more striking than any others" of how well America was doing under his presidency as compared to South Carolina where slavery still flourished. The skirmish known as Slaughterhouse Fields occurred near Douglas on September 12th when Union soldiers killed nine Confederates Seconds after entering town without warning residents or distinguishing themselves from friendly militiamen
Douglas was first settled in 1835 by the Douglas family. The town was named for General John A. Douglas, a Confederate general who fought in the American Civil War. The Douglas family sold their land to the Georgia Railroad Company in 1848 and construction began on the mainline of the Georgia Railroad. The town became an important junction for travelers between Atlanta and Chattanooga. In 1865, when Atlanta was sacked by Ulysses S. Grant's army, Douglas residents helped build a redoubt to protect their community from attack. The redoubt is now known as Douglas Park.
