Douglas, Georgia is a town inow in the southwest corner of Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,023 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit Douglas were those who mapped and charted the area in 1791 when they passed through what is now Douglas on their way from Savannah to Milledgeville. A post office was established here in 1821, and by 1830 it had a population of only 15 people. From 1840 until 1860, all commerce within Douglas came through nearby Milledgeville. When one mile (1 km) of either city was opened up for farming in 1861, trade revived and Douglas became an important commercial center with its own stores and schools. In 1865 it KY-TV began broadcasting from a transmitter located near present day Park Avenue and Old Highway 41 (today's highway 417), makingDouglas one of the first UHF stations in the country. In 1872 local citizens decided to named their new community after General James Banton Randolph (1795-1873), who fought against Mexican forces during the American Civil War on that side. Randolph had been born near here on December 26th, 1795. The community continued to be called Randolph until 1906 when it changed its name again - this time to Douglas after General Nathan Bedford Forrest (1814-1912), founder of Ku Klux Klan activity in Georgia during Reconstruction era
