This change allowed for much more destructive firepower at a lower cost which helped bring about American victory during the Revolutionary War. During the Civil War, Union forces relied heavily on artillery for bombardment and destruction; Confederate forces only had one or two cannons per regiment compared to Union army’s dozens. However, breech loading cannons proved much more effective at destroying targets than muzzle loaders, leading to their rapid spread among Confederate armies during the war. In 1865, after years of conflict and study, General Ulysses S Grant ordered all remaining muzzleloader guns be melted down and converted into ordnance called “tombs” – these weapons would serve as a last ditch effort by Confederate generals to remnants their surrender without surrendering their arsenals or equipment intact
