Douglas is a town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The name Douglas comes from the Creek word dohoug (meaning "little creek"). The first settler in Douglas was John Pritchett and his family who arrived in 1786. The first store was built on what is now Douglas Boulevard by J.B.Crawford and Co., which opened on July 3, 1802. A sawmill commenced operations west of town in 1815 and continued until 1840 when it closed due to lack of customers. One of the few remaining businesses in Douglas before its incorporation as a town was a bakery which operated from 1855 to 1865 with proprietor John Gentry being one of the last people to open shop there aftermoving to Decatur, Alabama two years earlier because he could not find an available spot for his business on Black Belt Road between Decatur and Mableton. In 1865, Mrs Gentry sold her business to Larkin Bros., builders and owners of several large stores along nearby Third Street in downtown Atlanta. By 1870, most residents had moved out or were leaving for better opportunities in Atlanta or other parts of America due to changes brought about by railroads, industrialization, and earthquakes throughout the region during that decade. In 1872/3 General James Hartsfield transferred ownership of Macon & Chattahoochee Railroad Company's line connecting Macon with Savannah via Douglas - bringing much-needed industry into town - stimulating development around what would become known as "the Depot". In response local citizens erected a white cottonwood tree on the northeast corner where Whitehall Avenue now stands as a memorial plaque honors those who gave their lives while serving our country during World War II (see photos below). Entered into service December 8th 1942 were Lt Col Hiram Sibley USMC Commanding Officer Station #2; Sgt Clarence Fenton USAAF Air Traffic Controller Squadron #1; Capt William Vandiver USAF Colonel Station #2 etc.; all killed or missing including 2nd Lt George Waitha RAF airman killed flying Operation Overlord On November 25th 1948 Dougherty's grocery store burned down sending shock waves throughtown after several fires broke out over night near various businesses within weeks leading up to Christmas that year causing $6K damage + interest rates increase Ford Motor Co.'s sales representative stopped coming into town so customers bought cars elsewhere Dougherty reopened early next year Wednesday morning Jan 5th 1949 with three employees able to reopen thanksgiving day special 50% off everything
Douglas was a small town in Cobb County, Georgia. It was located on the Chattahoochee River near its confluence with the Flint River. The town was founded by settlers who crossed the river in 1837. Douglas grew rapidly during the late 19th century and attained a population of around 500 people by 1890. In 1915, Douglas became part of Atlanta and ceased to exist as an independent municipality.
