The namesake for Doraville is Edwin Augustus Doraville, an American politician who served as the mayor of Atlanta from 1923 to 1929 and as United States ambassador to Japan from 1931 to 1933. Doraville was laid out in 1847 by General James Wilkinson and named after him. The town was platted in 1851 by John Aiken and named for his son Darius Aiken. In 1865, it was renamed after General Joseph Easley because he had been elected governor of Alabama the previous year. The post office at first did not operate within the town limits but extended into Fulton County beyond them; this change occurred on December 12, 1865 with the opening of what is now known as Post Office Road (later avenues). In 1896, Samuel French opened a grocery store in Doraville which became one of the most successful businesses in town until it closed in 1978. French also founded France's Theatre Company which toured nationally throughout the early 20th century before disbanding in 1922 due to financial difficulties. In 1925, Frenchman built Whatley's Ice Cream parlor on College Street which remained open until 1984 when it closed due to city code restrictions on commercial ice cream stores being located near schools.

They were followed by James and Sally Cockerill in 1800. Other early pioneers include John Ladd, who came in 1811; Ebenezer Burriss, who arrived in 1816; Jeremiah Day, who arrived in 1830; and Job Wade, who came in 1835. The community was named for General Nathan Bedford Forrest's home on Three Rivers Road (now Old Milton Road) near present-day Doraville High School. Forrest helped found the nearby city of Decatur with land he had purchased from the Cherokees after they had been forced to leave their homeland during the American Civil War. In 1865, when Atlanta became a city under mayor Andrew Johnson, Doraville voted against his measure approving annexation into Atlanta proper. Johnson vetoed legislation passed by the City Council that would have annexed Doraville intoAtlanta proper but it still went through because Johnson could not veto ordinances without specific legislative approval from both chambers of Congress. In 1895–96 there was a large fire that destroyed most of town center including many homes and businesses - this event is also known as "the Great Fire". The fire effectively ended any real growth or development for about 15 years until new housing developments began to sprout up throughout downtown Atlanta beginning around 1960s - some credit this later decade growth with helping revive interest in town center redevelopment again which eventually led to increased property values within just a few short decades!
