The name "Doraville" comes from two Cherokee words "dori" meaning "place of refuge and war" and "ville" meaning settlement or place of interest. In 1964, when Atlanta was incorporated as a city, Doraville voted to secede from Cobb County and become its own municipality with its own government and mayor.
