The downtown area has been called "the cultural and commercial center of the region." Doraville is home to several universities including Emory University and The Atlanta School of Law. The city was named for Sir John Evans Doraville, 3rd Baronet (1784-1856), an English nobleman who helped found Atlanta and served as its first mayor in 1837-38. Doraville experienced some economic setbacks during World War II; however, it regained some popularity after the war when housing projects were built there that attracted many war veterans. However, recent years have seen a resurgence in development within Doraville itself as well as elsewhere within Fulton County due to new industrial parks being established there; this has led to increased traffic congestion around town center which has had negative effects on local businesses.
