Doraville, Georgia is a small town located in Anoka County, Minnesota. The population was 1,514 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. The community was founded in 1885 by Norwegian immigrants who came to America on the "Herald" ship. They named their new settlement "Norwegian Village." The first post office was established in 1886, and the first school was built in 1890. The town became a village in 1907 and then a city in 1959. In 1951, the city of Doraville merged with neighboring Rochester to form what is now one of the Twin Cities metropolitan areas. In 1984, Doraville voters approved an ordinance creating an independent school district that operates all public schools within its borders (except for private schools). This system has been preserved through two mergers with other districts:54th Street School District #1 (1976), which merged with Brooklyn Park District #2 (1984), and Glenwood Hills School District #3 (2004), which merged with Maplewood School District #4 (2005).
