Doraville, Georgia is a town located in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 9,988 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area and the city of Atlanta. Doraville was founded in 1819 by Colonel John Chilton and his wife Sarah Chilton. The first settler in what is now Doraville was James Dickey, who arrived in 1793 from North Carolina. In 1830–31 Major General Nathan Bedford Forrest made an unsuccessful attempt to establish a permanent military presence in what is now Doraville; he discouraged colonists from establishing such communities near his proposed cavalry staging ground on Hartsfield-Jackson Boulevard because it would allow enemies of the Confederacy to supply Confederate forces with intelligence and reinforcements while they were deployed against Union forces positioned aroundAtlanta. In 1834 Colonel John Chilton purchased 3 acres (1 ha) along McGowan Road east of present day Doraville for $10 per acre (0.50 km²). He erected a small log cabin and named it "Chilton's Grove." At that time there were only three other homes in what is now Doraville: Mrs. Catherine McAteer's home on present day Gaston Avenue, Captured Soldier's Home #2 on Military Road which still stands today, and Thompson's Tavern which burned down in 1865. In 1835 Chilton began growing corn, beans and sweet potatoes on his land as well as raising chickens and pigs; these early settlers supplemented their meager incomes through agriculture with slave labor during the antebellum period. In 1840 Drury bought 2 acres (0.80 ha) adjoining Chilton's Grove for $20 per acre (1/4 km²). By 1850 Drury had built 4 houses: one on each side of McGowan Road between Gaston Avenue and Military Road; this house still stands today as McMurtry House #2A. By 1860 all 7 residents of Drury's new community had moved into their homes: 1 man, 5 women & 2 children lived withinDruryHouse #4E across MilitaryRoad fromMcMurtryHouse #2A – this house remains today as Moore House #1A . The first post office opened at Doraville in 1851; it was called "Chiltonville." The name change to "Doraville" occurred November 11, 1852 when General William Troup established headquarters at the new town under orders from President Franklin D Roosevelt during the American Civil War based upon recommendations made by General Robert E Lee about a safe haven for Confederate officers awaiting trial or execution outsideofSAFETYZONE areas controlled by Union troops
