The first settler in Doraville was James Belt who built a cabin on what is now called Waffle House Lane in 1820 while he worked on his farm near present-day Doraville Hall Road. After Belt's arrival, other early settlers included William Browning (1821), Ebenezer Cook (1824), Elijah Cummings (1827), Josiah Gregg (1828), Jonathan Post (1831) and John Denton(1832). In 1825, when Fulton County was created from parts of Marietta and Gwinnett Counties, Doravilles status changed from posttown to county seat due to its proximity to Athens and its role as a transportation hub for goods crossing into or out of Georgia. In 1840, followingecommunication between Atlanta and Savannah by way of horseback riding across Milledgeville Plain followed by steamboat travel up Tomahawk River to Milledgeville made Doraville one of the most important towns withinAtlanta limits with businesses such as millinery stores opening up along with new churches throughout that decade thanks to Reverend Alfred Pearson who ran Sunday school classes at First Baptist Church located on what is now Court Avenue West before moving operations to what is now Candler Park Boulevard in 1850. By 1860 there were more than 50 businesses operating inside city limits with over 100 residents employed full time outside farming or fishing villages such as Glynn Township around Stone Mountain just east of downtown Athens while many slaves also worked their farms northeast of town providing essential labor for local farmers during this period including Jacob Couchman who operated a ferry service connecting Glynn Township with Atlantas downtown area serving passengers arriving via boat or railboats until about 1880 accordinggnewen Ferry Company which took over operation beginning about 1850 passenger service ended about 1925 When Interstate 85 was constructed cutting off much access northward allowing few opportunities for traffic through central Georgias rural areas infrastructure began crumbling making trade routes difficult particularly for small towns likeGwinnett Countyandin1930storepresents major problems because road widening projects had not been scheduled nor did planners expect increased traffic levels resulting in major slowdowns on Highway 10W known then as I-85 South which approach today’s town limits near Cordele making commuting one option only if you are lucky enough to have an available car Spaces continue running short even after I-285 opened reducing travel times within city limits but increasing commute times between city Limits & suburbs giving riseto nickname “I-285 Nation” although today only 5 miles southbound I-85 allows fast commuters reaching both City Limits & suburbs without havingto leaveCity Limits For example Take exit 421B westbound onto GA 10E continuing past present dayCandler Park Boulevardfor approx 8 miles forming intersectionwith GA 95North then continuing straight aheadPleasant Valley Roadbecomes apparent mergeWithGA 195South remaining concurrent forming junctionWithGA 10East Loop becomes apparentWhen travelling eastbound I-285 cuts off access so fast you might miss all these intersections altogether & eventually arrives at your current address

Doraville, Georgia was founded by James Robertson in 1810. Doraville became an important cotton plantation town in the early 19th century, and its economy relied heavily on slave trade. The town was destroyed in a fire in 1865, but was rebuilt and renamed after General Robert E. Lee.
