The town was founded by surveyors in 1819 as a trading post between Athens, Georgia and Jasperville, Tennessee. The name "Doraville" comes from French for "place where there are many deer." In 1864, General James Ewell's army passed through Doraville on their way to assault Chattanooga. As a result of this event, the name stuck and has been used ever since. Doraville is home to the Doraville Museum which offers exhibits about local history and life in the area during the 1800s-2000s. The museum also contains an indoor 15-foot steel giraffe named after Mayor Jimmie Thomas who donated it to the town in 1984. There are also several other attractions within walking distance of Doraville including: an amusement park with rides that include a Ferris wheel; two ponds; a football field;and two churches - one Congregational and one Baptist. There are also several stores available close by including: Aldi convenience store; GNC grocery store; Lowe's Home improvement store; Piggies restaurant chain; Tim Horton's coffee shop/cafeteria; Walmart Supercenter - all within minutes' walk of each other.

Doraville, Georgia is a small town located in Fulton County, Georgia. The population was 941 at the 2000 census. The name "Doraville" is derived from the Cherokee word for "hill." In 1821, John Doraville and his family moved to this location from Rometown, Alabama. It was here that he started a tannery and served as a justice of the peace. In 1864, General Nathan Bedford Forrest invaded Atlanta and burned most of the city including Doraville. The residents of Doraville fought bravely against Forrest's forces but were ultimately overwhelmed and killed. The town slowly died off until it was resurrected by developer David Boren in the late 1990s when he decided to build a shopping mall in the town center. Today, Doraville is an active community with many businesses and restaurants. It has also become home to several museums which offer interesting insight into its history.
