Decatur, Georgia is a city in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 837 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Fulton County and the home of Decatur University. The first residents of what is now Decatur were farmers who migrated from eastern Georgians to this area in 1814. In 1819, General James Wofford named it after John Caulfield, 1st Baronet of Calendar Hundred (now Oxfordshire). During the American Civil War, Decatur was a Confederate forces' stronghold. In 1967, Atlanta annexed part of Fulton County to become its second largest city by population after New York City. Decatur is a city in central Georgia, United States. It was founded in 1802 by General Andrew Jackson as part of the new state of Alabama and named for Decatur County, Alabama. The population was 116,826 at the 2010 census. The area that would become Decatur had been inhabited by the Creek Nation since before European explorers arrived in what is now Georgia. When the US Army established Fort Moultrie on the Chattahoochee River in 1802, it decided to settle land east of the river near present-day Marietta. A team from New York City's Second Continental Congress chose Decatur as its site because it seemed like an ideal location for a military outpost and its climate – located on a bend where prevailing winds kept water liquid – made it an ideal place to grow crops and build fortifications. As early as 1800, people were trading with Creeks along what is now Interstate 285 and other nearby rivers. By 1822, settlers had built four log cabins around what is today downtown Decatur. The first permanent settler arrived in 1824 when Captain John Dooley set up his home at what is now East Fourth Street and South First Avenue

Decatur was founded in 1833 by General James Wilkinson and his brother-in-law, Colonel George Macon. The town was named for the Decatur River which ran through it. It rapidly grew as a slaveholding center due to its strategic location at the junction of several roadways. In 1856, Decatur became the county seat of Fulton County. After years of growth and development, Decatur experienced aDecline during the late 19th century due to many factors including economic difficulty, suburbanization, and disease epidemics. However, it has since recovered and is now an important urban center located within the Atlanta metropolitan area
