Decatur, Georgia is a city in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 31,583. It is the county seat of Fulton County and home to Decatur's two-thirds of the University of Georgia's student body. In addition to its economic importance as a center for education and trade, Decatur also has a significant military presence due to its location on the Trans-Mississippi River. The city was founded by General Joseph Ewing in 1802 as part of what would become known as the Fourth Seminole War against Native American forces. After Ewing's death in 1804, his wife purchased land within present-day Decatur from Jocasta Hinton for $10 per acre (valued at $4 million today). The town grew rapidly Once it became first US county seat in 1821 after being moved from Athens.
