Decatur, Georgia is a small city located in the southeastern United States. The city was founded by General James Wilkinson on December 6, 1807 as part of the Jackson Purchase. It was named for General Andrew Jackson and became a county seat of Marshall County on January 3, 1827. It was renamed Decatur after General John A. Decatur in 1861 and then again on February 2, 1881 when it became part of Atlanta metropolitan area. The population of Decatur grew rapidly during the 20th century and reached its peak at 1 million people in 1950. However, recent decreases in population have led to decreasing growth and most recently the city has had a population of 700 people. The history of Decatur began with the arrival of Europeans in what is now Georgia in 1785. Spanish traders established trading posts along the Savannah River Estuary while French colonists built Fort Caroline near present-day Savannah from 1793 until 1800. American settlers arrived following the war for independence (1811-1815) and developed land around what is now Decatur between 1821 and 1830. In 1835, Wilkinson purchased 9 miles (14 km) east of present-day Decatur from Major Samuel Jones for $2,000 cash plus 400 acres (16 ha). He named his new town after himself – General James Wilkinson’s original goal had been to rename all nearby settlements after military commanders who had fought with him during his Creek War campaign against Native Americans in Alabama (1813–1814). In 1850, when Atlanta became an independent city, it included parts of both Marshall County and Fulton County; these two counties were merged into Marshall County on December 5th, 1951 under Governor George Wallace’s Executive Order No. 8653/1951 which also renamed all adjacent communities accordingly such as “Decatur” or “Marshalltown” among others . The City Council first voted to annex portions of Dalton Township on September 25th 1911 but this vote failed due to lack support from Mayor Whitehead who wanted to keep his township separate fromAtlanta From 1895 until 1917 there were only three businesses within walking distance of each other: one grocery store operated by Mrs Gertrude Hargrave across Broad Street from her home on Piedmont Avenue; one dry goods store operated by Wm Crain across Peachtree Street from downtown; and one general store operated by Jno Epps across Roswell Road from rural areas northwestward including Jacksonville Landing where many African Americans worked as farmhands prior to becoming citizens or residentsof Atlanta
