Decatur is a city in northwestern Georgia, United States. The population was 26,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Dekalb County. The name "Decatur" comes from the French word for "a decoy." The first Europeans to visit what is now Decatur were French fur traders in 1699-1800. They named the area Nouvelle Georgie after George II of Great Britain who had just become king of England and proprietor of Louisiana Territory. In 1802, General Andrew Jackson made it his headquarters during his bitter rampage across Georgia against Native American chiefs who had been raiding western Cherokee territory near Gainesville. In 1807, he founded Fort Jackson on the Savannah River adjacent to modern-day Decatur as part of an effort to protect southern Georgia from Mexican forces under General Antonio López de Santa Anna's government. In 1821, General James Kenedy moved westward from Tallapoosa into what is now Dekalb County and began developing land around present-day Decatur as part of his efforts to create a new bypass for Atlanta that would run south through central Georgia. As settlers arrived in increasing numbers and animals were brought overland from Alabama, Tennessee and other parts of the South, streams were diverted and channels created so irrigation could be established; today's principal streetscape feature this type of engineering feat - Grandview Avenue being one notable example - which later led to growth in downtown Decatur when railroads became available for transportation there. The railroad depot at Depot Square (now known as Harry S Truman Presidential Library) opened in 1885; passenger service ended operations there in 1951 but local freight continued until 1973 when a spur line was built eastward along US Highway 20 to serve Athens; today both directions use diesel trains hauled by CSX Transportation services out of Terminal B at Marietta station.) In 1886 also came Decatur's first post office; it was located on Ferry Street between First National Bank and Peachtree Street. In recent years, downtownDecatur has seen a resurgence with new restaurants opening up including Alinea Greek restaurant which opened up in December 2013 on Peachtree Street just north of Interstate 75; Pizzeria Locale which opened up on December 12th 2016 on Clairmont Avenue between 11th Street NW and 12th Street NW near Regency Ballroom; Asbury Park Brewery released their first beer called "Amber" on October 15th 2017 from 4pm to 10pm located at 5222 Peachtree Road NE across from Lyft/Uberdrop Off; Underground Artspace released their first show "Underground Art: A Tribute To Donny Hathaway" on January 20th 2018 from 7pm to midnight located inside CenturyLink Arena next to Verizon Wireless US headquarters
Decatur was founded in 1819 by General James Wilkinson as a trading post on the Decatur River. It grew rapidly, becoming a city in 1834. The city's first school was built in 1835 and its first hospital in 1857. The city hosted the Atlanta Cotton Exchange from 1865 to 1889. In 1895, Decatur became the capital of Georgia and remained so until 1907.
