In 1833, John Neely Bryan became territorial governor of Georgia and ordered all counties within his jurisdiction be divided into two districts: one for attorneys general and one for sheriffs. The districting scheme was designed to favor lawyer-owned businesses over those of farmers or other citizens. In 1840, Bryan dissolved this political arrangement by ordering Sheriff Cranch to take possession of all jail cells and release everyone except bondiffs serving sentence for more than five days without bail pending appeal. This created an uproar that led to his impeachment proceedings; he was acquitted but went through with another term as governor before dying in office two years later. After his death, much of what is now downtown Decatur was developed as part of what became known as Bryan's Promenade Movement which promoted downtown development and improvement through marketing efforts by local officials along with contributions from private individuals and groups interested in developing the area around downtown Decatur during that time period - including Jardine & Macdonald LLP which donated property adjacent to Eubank Field (now Allstate Arena) where meetings were held for various civic organizations interested in promotion of downtown business interests while also providing meeting space for future developers/initiatives looking to invest in the area south side of State Street between Second and Third Streets...
In 1820, the town of Decatur was founded on the Chattahoochee River by General Andrew Jackson. The town grew rapidly and by 1830, it had a population of over 2,000 people. In 1835, Decatur became the capital of Georgia.
