In 1892–93 Decatur was host to the world’s first international fair (the Centennial Exposition) which featured over 350 exhibitors from 20 countries. It also served as a proving ground for American aviation technology with demonstrations conducted at both Armstrong Field (later Peachtree Airport) and Douglas Aircraft Plant #1 (now Lockheed Martin Aeronautics). The exposition helped spur growth in Decatur through tourism which reached $10 million by 1912 according to official reports as well as industrial development with new manufacturing plants established such as Armour Glass Works & Foundry Company (1899), Pritchett Rubber Works & Refining Company (1900), Armour Electric Light Manufacturing Company (1902), Hawkins Carriage Works & Mfg.(1903),and Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport Commissioned Airplane Factory No 1(1927). In World War II local companies such as Gritton Industries Logistics Corporation provided essential war production needs including munitions production at Abrams Plant #2; Gritton also manufactured military vehicles such as tanks and self-propelled artillery systems during that conflict culminating with Operation Market Garden – Allied airborne assault against Nazi Germany on July 29th 1944 which resulted in decisive victory currently decaying infrastructure has led to much speculation about possible redevelopment plans for downtown Decatur with mixed results so far

In 1892, Decatur became the capital of Fulton County after being moved from Milledgeville. It experienced another period of rapid growth during World War I as businesses and residences flooded into the city for military service or work in munitions plants. During the 1940s and 1950s,Decatur experienced declines in population and economic activity due to strategic bombing raids by Allied forces during World War II and Civil Rights Movement protests against racial segregation in Atlanta. However, recent revitalization has led to new business growth and increased levels of prosperity for the city. Today, Decatur is an important cultural center that hosts many events throughout the year including art shows, music festivals, rodeos and theatrical performances
On December 1, 1807, Decatur was founded as a town in the newly created Georgia Territory. Its first mayor, James White, served from that date until his death on October 15 of that year. The first building erected in Decatur was the Masonic Lodge No. 1 which stood on what is now First Avenue and State Street. In 1822, Decatur incorporated as a city and by 1830 had reached its present size with a population of around 2,500 people. In 1836 it became the capital of the new Georgia Territory and continued to be so for almost fifty years. By 1855 it had shrunken to its current size of around 100 people due to an influx of newcomers from Tennessee and Alabama who were seeking land grants in the new territory. On February 5th, 1898,Decatur became part of the newly formed state ofGeorgia when it was admitted into Union as one of its thirteen original states. It has since grown again tremendously and now has a population over 25 thousand people living within its limits!
