Today, only a few remain as part of the city's boundaries; most have grown into larger cities or suburbs outside of Georgia. The history of Decatur dates back to 1839 when General James K. Polk arrived in what is now Decatur County with his forces after defeating Indian warriors at the Battle of Buena Vista Creek near present-day Chattanooga, Tennessee. He named the new settlement for himself, taking inspiration from his home country – Spain – where he had been born some years earlier while serving as a subaltern in Mexico’s army under Santa Anna. As America grew more expansive, Spanish possessions were lost in North America so Polk decided to name his new settlement for Spain’s King Ferdinand VII who had helped liberate Mexico from Spanish rule following its invasion two years earlier than planned. Polk arrived at what is now downtown Decatur on October 6, 1839 with about 100 men including 15 Americans and 10 Spaniards under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Francisco Márquez de Lara y Valdés y Becerra which included 8 cannons and 4 cavalry horses that would later be called “the first cavalry regiment ever raised in America” according to historian Edwin Morrill Richards Jr.. The town began slowly growing with just a few buildings erected until it reached its current size by 1841 with around 400 residents living inside a wooden fence surrounding an open field measuring only 0.5 square miles (1 km²). By 1850, there were 1,800 people living within a radius encompassing everything east of US Hwy 26 including today’s City limits extending all the way south to Old Hickory Lake while also including parts of today’s Cobb County which was then part Of Marietta County

Decatur is a city in and the county seat of Decatur County, Georgia, United States. The population was 21,412 at the 2010 census. It was founded by John Hogg in 1802 as a small community on the Chattahoochee River. By 1825, it had become an important commercial and agricultural center due to its location near the then-northern boundary of the Creek Nation. In 1868, Decatur became the capital of Georgia when Atlanta was established as the state's new capital. AfterAtlanta's incorporation as a municipality in 1898, Decatur continued to serve as its municipal seat until 1951. The history of Decatur goes back to 1802 when John Hogg settled on land between what is now Reseda Boulevard and Gwinnett Parkway for £10 per acre (equivalent to $ million today). As early as 1800 white men were living in what is now Decatur and within two years they had built a small log cabin known as "Hogg House". John Hogg purchased 640 acres () east of present-day Reseda Boulevard from Indian agent James Fenton in 1801 for £135 (equivalent to $ million today). In 1825, George Washington Lewis opened his store at 300 South Fourth Street in what is now downtown Decatur. This enabled trade with Native Americans who lived along the Chattahoochee River and its tributaries outside of town limits. By 1830, there were over fifty businesses located inside town limits with an average business size of twenty-four feet by six feet (eight meters by three meters). At that time citizens could purchase goods upriver or downriver from their homes for transportation into town. In 1865, after Confederate forces sacked Fort Pillow near Chattanooga during the American Civil War, resident Andrew Johnson decided that Atlanta needed another government center since all governmental services were being conducted out of Chattanooga without any central office or control. He ordered construction began on what would become Atlanta's first courthouse—the First Baptist Church Building on Peachtree Street served as both courthouse and jail from 1865 until it burned down in 1870. The Second Baptist Church building located behind Centennial Hall served concurrently from 1896 until it too was destroyed by fire in 1907; however this building still stands today housing decathlon stadium used today by local high school students during December Stadium events like football games etc., making it one of only two buildings left standing from that era! During Reconstruction following Birmingham's racial riots in 1919 demonstrations took place throughout metro Atlanta including parts around downtownDecatur which quickly evolved into nightlife area which boasted many theaters & live music venues such as Majestic Theatre and Fulton Theatre among others before eventually becoming more gated & upscale areas these days Many people here trace their roots back to those who originally populated this area including some who've even been elected officials here over time...
