The city is named after General Andrew Jackson and was founded by him in 1802 as Athens on the east side of the Decatur River. The first Europeans to visit what is now Decatur were French traders in 1565–66 under leadership of Antoine de la Motte-Fénelon. Polk ordered all settlers west of the Chattahoochee River either to leave or be destroyed. Many of these Scots-Irish families chose to stay and start anew in what would become Decatur. In 1868, Decatur became an incorporated village after voters approved a charter amendment creating it from parts of Montgomery and Gwinnett Counties east of the Chattahoochee River. By 1890, Decatur had a school and two churches (the First Baptist Church and St John's Episcopal Church). The town developed slowly because there were no major economic opportunities until after World War II when heavy industry arrived thanks to federal stimulus programs created during the Roosevelt administration. The post office was established in 1892 and remained in operation until 1988; its last letter being "D." After several years without mail service due to lack of funding, DECATUR POSTAL CORP., successor organization to Alabama Mail Corp., opened an office on White Street in downtown Decatur on July 1, 1998 with express mail service beginning July 2nd After Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans on August 29th 2005, many residents within Marietta drove overland for days as they awaited relief supplies or waiting for cartons of goods from Marietta that never arrived due to bad roads and flooding caused by Hurricane Katrina. On September 5th2005 villagers traveled by bus from Marietta into central DECATUR for food distribution purposes only to find their grocery stores closed due to damage done by Hurricane Katrina

After the war, Decatarf continued to grow as a cotton-producing city until it declined in importance during Reconstruction. Today, Decatur is home to several museums and restaurants.
